Verrucae (often called verrucas) are one of the most common foot problems we see at Arnold Podiatry Clinic. They can be painful, stubborn, and frustrating - especially when they don’t respond to over-the-counter treatments.
In this article, we explain what verrucae are, how they spread, and what the most effective treatments look like.

What is a verruca?
A verruca is a wart that appears on the sole of the foot. It’s caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which enters the skin through tiny cuts or weak points.
Because verrucae often grow inwards (due to pressure from walking), they can become sore and feel like you’re standing on a small stone.
Common symptoms of verrucae
You may have a verruca if you notice:
A rough or thickened patch of skin on the sole of the foot
Small black dots inside the lesion (often tiny blood vessels)
Pain when walking or squeezing the area
A cluster of lesions (sometimes called mosaic verrucae)
How do verrucae spread?
Verrucae are contagious and thrive in warm, damp environments. They’re commonly picked up in:
Swimming pools
Changing rooms
Gym showers
Shared floors/communal areas
They can also spread between family members via shared towels, socks, or footwear.
Do verrucae go away on their own?
Sometimes — but not always. Verrucae can disappear without treatment, particularly in children, but adults often find verrucae persist for months or even years.
If you’re in pain, it’s spreading, or it’s affecting your ability to walk, it’s best to seek professional treatment.
What treatments actually work?
There are several treatments available, depending on the verruca and your medical history.
Salicylic Acid (OTC treatments)
These can be effective for some patients but require consistent daily use over several weeks. They don’t always work on deep or long-standing verrucae.
Cryotherapy (freezing)
This can be effective but is often uncomfortable and not always suitable depending on the location or sensitivity of the foot.
SWIFT® Microwave Verruca Treatment
At Arnold Podiatry Clinic, we offer SWIFT® Verruca Treatment — a modern, clinically supported verruca treatment developed in the UK.
SWIFT® uses targeted microwave energy to stimulate the body’s natural immune response to clear the verruca. Treatments are quick, typically with minimal disruption to daily activities and no need for dressing changes.
Benefits of SWIFT® include:
Short treatment time
Minimal discomfort
No need for acids or repeated home treatments
Suitable for stubborn verrucae
